HOUSTON (AP) — A man was fatally shot on Saturday after Houston police said he stabbed and injured two officers.

The officers had been called at 8:41 a.m. to a home in southwest Houston where the man’s family members had reported he was having a mental health crisis, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said during a news conference.

Police tried to deescalate the situation but the man pulled out a knife and stabbed the two officers, Finner said.

One of the officers fatally shot the man.

One officer was stabbed in the jaw and neck area while the other was wounded in the chin, Finner said.

“Both of them are going to be OK,” he said. “Both of our officers, when I talked to them, were concerned with the suspect’s family and the suspect. I ask … that we pray for the families.”

The officers will be placed on administrative leave while police and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office investigate the shooting.

The name of the man killed was not immediately released by authorities.

Finner said the man had a history of mental illness and police had previously been called to the home several times.
