It’s a New Year and a new reminder that former D-list celebrities, whose 15 minutes were over 16 minutes after it started, will do anything to try to stay relevant – include beg for attention via unhinged tweets.

Local Jeopardy contestant Ken Jennings (or the guy your grandmother refers to as “that guy… I don’t remember his name but he was on that quiz show”) has taken to Twitter to wish death on the Midwest and South because, in his view, they don’t conform to his political beliefs.

For someone we’re told is smart, Jennings sure does say silly things on Twitter. Over the weekend, he wrote: “When Trump starts a war, I’m just hoping the other side understands the deal and only bombs, like, the Midwest and the South.”

If this were a one-off, I suppose we can just write it off as being dopey on Twitter. I suffer from dopey tweets, too. But the tenor of his account is worrisome.

I’m flattered that Jennings listens to me on KIRO Radio (he tweeted as much, along with an insult of course), but I’m hoping you’ll reject his mean-spirited, smug, and scary attitude.

Ken Jennings wishes death on people who voted for a candidate he doesn’t like. Think about that for a moment because he’s about to call President-elect Donald Trump a fascist. Jennings, now a children’s book author with Simon and Schuster, jokes about Trump sexually assaulting a 13-year-old. He throws around the term fascism, almost pretending he can define it.

This is some twisted stuff. Sure, he can claim it’s all being done in humor. Perhaps it is. But does anyone suspect he doesn’t really believe some of this? It seems like he’s masking his feelings with bad humor so he can justify his hate. In fact, he hates Trump so much, he’s falling into the derangement syndrome we saw with conservatives who hated President Barack Obama.

Folks, we can’t have it both ways. This goes beyond Jennings. You can’t marry yourself to the claim that we should have rejected Trump because “Love Trump Hates” then push hate after he was elected?

I pushed Never Trump proudly. Trump is not a conservative. I thought he was scamming us all. But, he won. You can react in a number of ways, including working to ensure his good ideas (yes, he has some) are passed and the bad ones rejected. But you can do that without name-calling, without unhinged personal attacks unless you never really thought “love trumps hate.” And if you never thought that and used it to singularly define your candidate, maybe you’re the reason Trump won?
