SEABECK, Wash. – David Zaleski is still grappling with the news about a missing neighbor and a house fire.

“They’ve been neighbors for 12 years,” said Zaleski, a Seabeck resident for 50 years.

John Careaga, 43, and his 2005 Ford F-150 pickup truck have been missing since at least 11:30 p.m. Friday when Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call that something violent was happening inside the Seabeck home.

But they couldn’t go inside because the house was on fire.

“Firefighters battled the fire,” said Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputy Scott Wilson. “Got it secured. Got it put out. And in their course of doing that, they came across the remains of three people inside the residence, two males and a female.”

Three people were found dead in the home, which was on fire when police arrived early Saturday morning. The incident is being investigated as a homicide.

Detectives are searching for a brown 2005 Ford F-150 pickup truck with Washington state license plate number C89383B. Detectives were searching for 16-year-old Hunter Schapp, accounted for him Saturday afternoon. Police searching for John Derek Careaga.

KIRO 7 interviewed Careaga five years ago when he held a fundraiser at a Bremerton taco stand he and his wife own.  Now, members of this tight-knit community are leaving expressions of concern for his family.

“They’re a wonderful family,” said Zachary Fajardo, of Bremerton.  “It’s terrible to see how it went, how it came down to.”

Zaleski still can’t believe it.

“They were just so nice,” he said. “Geez, nice people don’t get killed like that.”

Several neighbors said they heard gunfire Friday night, but investigators think that might have been someone shooting at targets.

At one point, they thought a 16-year-old family member was missing. But they found him alive and well.
