The Seattle Police Department has had issues over the years.
From the 1999 World Trade Organization riots and the 2001 Mardi Gras riots, when the chiefs in charge were both criticized for not being prepared to deal with the violence, to today.
The SPD is currently meeting standards set by the Justice Department after the agency found Seattle officers engaged in a pattern of excessive use of force that violated the Constitution as well as Federal law.
While controversies get media attention, “we” seldom spend much print space or broadcast time talking about what goes right with the SPD. Comment below if you have a story of how the men and women in blue helped you.
The SPD believes it has a “good department” and they’re recruiting new officers to “make the department better.”
“Part of that process includes ensuring that our officers reflect Seattle’s values and diversity,” they state in a hiring notice.
“We are looking to recruit and hire from a pool of applicants who are well educated, and strong in character and integrity. The process to become a Seattle police officer is not an easy one. It is rigorous and competitive as we only want the very best for our police force and our city.”
If you think they’re talking to you, here’s the information on the SPD pretest workshops.
Application filing period closes this week, on November 1st. The exam date is November 10th on the UW campus.
