Las Vegas winnings change my year

Slot-machine winnings totaling $0.15 aren’t impressive by anyone’s definition. Most of us would walk by 15 cents on a sidewalk without picking it up, yet that insignificant amount of money has spun me in a new direction this year.

Many years ago I lived in Nevada, so I know slots are always set to favor the casinos. Just for fun, I dropped a couple of dollars in a slot machine during my holiday vacation. I ended up keeping a nickel one day, and an entire dime the next. Sure I lost more than I gained, but I prefer focusing on my “winnings.”

voucherAs I looked at the measly vouchers, I thought about what I could do to improve my chances of being a winner in Vegas. I could take a class in slots and really figure out the science behind them. I could talk to experts and find out the best games to play. I could do some research and figure out which casinos are rigged for the highest payouts. It would be a new challenge for me – love that!

Except…

Even with hours of research, training and practice, how good could I really become at gambling? I’d be a more informed gambler, but I still wouldn’t be great. And I’d be putting a lot of effort into a task for the sole purpose of mastering something I don’t do well. My life has been spent trying to master things I’ve told myself I can’t do. I reach some level of success with each skill, and then I move on to something new.

What if…

Instead of trying to continually accomplish new things, what would happen if I concentrated on a few things I already do? That’s my challenge for 2011. I’m focusing on five things I currently do and taking those skills to a higher level. It’s a big change for me, motivated by small change. I bet at least 15 cents I’ll like the results.
