Secretary of State Kim Wyman has been given a clean bill of health after battling colon cancer over the past few months.

“(This year) has been a really emotional roller coaster from being diagnosed back in March to today hearing from my doctor that the tumor is gone,” Wyman said.

Wyman was was diagnosed with colon cancer in March. She has spent the time since then undergoing treatment and keeping the public up-to-date on her progress via her Wyman Wire blog. She returned to the job full-time in early July.

“It’s been tough,” she said. “I definitely had a number of days out of the office and had my staff making sure that everything was being run well. It did enable me to be home and do the treatment that I needed to do to get better.”

Wyman’s surgeon told her this week that the cancerous tumor is gone. Wyman says she will undergo scans in the next few weeks to ensure all cancer cells are absent, but it looks like good news for Washington state’s top election official.

She said the news has given her a new appreciation for life and thanks her staff for stepping up while she got treated.

“It’s definitely put in perspective what is important in life and not wasting your time on things that don’t matter,” she said.
