Women are opening businesses at a rate twice that of men. Today there are over a million women-owned firms in the United States, which generate $1.9 trillion in sales. These companies provide jobs to 13 million people.
But the story for women business owners isn’t all rosy. An estimate from the National Federation of Independent Businesses finds a majority of small companies women started only earn about $50,000 a year.
Even so, the risks are worth it according to a half dozen sassy Seattle women I talked with about running their own companies. Hear a 13 minute discussion with some of the women at a Crave party last night on my podcast page.
