Boeing is saying a little more about the emergency landing of one of its test 787 Dreamliners on approach to Laredo, Texas yesterday.
The test plane lost “primary electrical power as a result of an onboard electrical fire,” according to a statement just released.
While they’re still investigating the cause of the fire, “initial inspection appears to indicate that a power control panel in the aft electronics bay will need to be replaced on ZA002. We are inspecting the power panel and surrounding area near that panel to determine if other repairs will be necessary.”
The process of analyzing the data they’ve collected from the test flight will take several days, they say. “We are committed to finding the cause quickly but will not rush the technical team in its efforts.”
The 787 team will continue ground tests, but will not resume flight tests until they know what the problem is.
The program is several years behind schedule, but the company won’t speculate on how this will effect their production and delivery schedule.
The “incident” as Boeing calls it appears to have had an impact on their stock. Boeing shares fell $2.18, or 3.2 percent, to $67.07 at the close, making it easily the worst performer in the Dow Jones industrial average today.
