Dave Ross Commentary – Listen: Cut it down or shut it down

It was his parting shot at this weeks news conference, and I think he meant it:

“I am not going to move any kind of short term CR at current levels. When we say, ‘We’re going to cut spending,’ read my lips-We’re going to cut spending. Thanks. “

House speaker John Boehner – saying he won’t move a continuing resolution — that’s the resolution necessary to keep the government’s check from bouncing two weeks from now — unless there are substantial spending cuts. A reporter asked him if he was sticking by his numbers:

“We’re going to cut $100 billion based on the budget that the president’s submitted.”

One upon a time, to say such a thing was to defy the laws of nature. In the past congress has compromised not by cutting but by spending… “Well if you’re going to buy THAT for YOUR district, then I’m get to buy this for MY district.” But there are signs that’s changing. Democrats and Republicans DID get together to cut a military jet fighter engine the military didn’t want. And when Republicans proposed cutting funding for public radio, Democrats proposed cutting the military’s sponsorship of NASCAR. Maybe they’ll actually do BOTH.

Maybe there’s a new culture emerging “Well if you’re going to CUT that, ten I’m going to CUT this.”

The only possibly discouraging thing I heard was when Mr Boehner was asked again about that jet engine, which is built in his district:

“I have no comment.”
