How many times must we see this story?

Dateline Wall Street: Associated Press — “Corporate profits are up. Stock prices are up. So why isn’t anyone hiring?”

And the answer turns out to be — American companies are hiring, just in other countries. Yes, part of the reason is that’s where the new customers are, but the other part is that foreign countries have better educated workers. Seriously. That’s what experts will tell you.

Which is CRAZY!

Can you imagine if we really were the country we think we are? If we really were that exceptional model of freedom and innovation?

If we really were that country, what would be happening right now?

I’ll tell you. Our innovative, exceptional CEOs would draw a line in the sand. “American companies hiring overseas because our people don’t measure up? This will not stand!” they would say defiantly.

And they would start pouring money freely and voluntarily into public education, and some would even start up their OWN system of free schools which would search out talented young people, and offer them world class preparation for the American jobs of the future.

And where would they get the money? How about by not awarding gold-plated executive pay and retirement packages which are more suited to the gilded lordlings of the aristocracy than a free Republic? And if it turns out American CEOs would rather outsource than invest in America, how about our Governors start going on trade missions to recruit foreign ceo’s to come here and start businesses, (*) and give American CEO’s a little managerial competition…

No no! Don’t wake me up! It was such a wonderful hallucination.
