Dave Ross Commentary – Listen: The greatest terrorist of all…the planet

Here it is again, another terrorist plot.

“A number of young Muslim men have been arrested in several cities in the UK. They appear to be from Bangladesh.”

Another disaster averted.

And then, I happened to see the AP’s annual catalog of disaster and realized that the greatest terrorist of all…isn’t some radical bomb-thrower. It’s The Planet.

In the year 2010, earthquakes, heat waves, floods, mega-typhoons, blizzards, landslides and droughts killed a quarter of a million people – most of them in January’s earthquake in Haiti.

By the AP’s calculations, that’s more than TWICE the number of people who died in terrorist attacks in the last 25 years, COMBINED.

Many of those deaths could have been prevented with a few rules about how and where to build homes. In the third world, forget it.

But even here in the first world — we keep developing in much the same way even as the earth is showing us hotter hots, colder colds, wetter wets, and dryer drys. Fear of terrorists has us surrendering to body scans, but we have no fear of the scary climate data, we keep building in earthquake zones, we let suburbs spread across the desert, and the … Earth is just rubbing her hands…

But we ARE good at stopping this stuff:

“The statements by the police do indicate that the arrests had to be made today because of public safety.”

Saved again — at least until the next time the Big Blue Marble tries to shake us off.
