LISTEN: Mayor McGinn’s pot-enforcement summit

Did Seattle Police go too far in raiding a medical marijuana patient’s Leschi home, where he was legally growing two small pot plants? The incident is prompting Mayor Mike McGinn and local law enforcement leaders to review the city’s response to pot cases.

50-year-old Will Laudanski says he was shaken up after the October 25th raid, where officers busted down his door, pinned him to the floor, and rummaged through his possessions. SPD was responding to a complaint about marijuana in the apartment, and had obtained a search warrant to check the unit for an illegal grow operation. Laudanski was able to produce paperwork confirming the two plants in his bedroom were for medical purposes.

The story caught the attention of City Hall after being covered by Dominic Holden of the Stranger as well as Dave Ross and Luke Burbank.

McGinn was on Ross and Burbank today to discuss his upcoming meeting with Seattle’s Police Chief, City Council, King County Sheriff, King County Prosecutor, and City Attorney to review policies for dealing with marijuana enforcement in the city:

McGinn pointed out the mixed messages from federal, state, and city laws relating to pot use and possession that officers must navigate. “The public’s mood about the war on drugs is changing,” insisted the Mayor, “we need to give clear direction and guidance…with respect to these three conflicting laws.”

While McGinn supports legalizing marijuana, he acknowledged the criminal element associated with the drug: “There are in fact large grow operations which are the scene of some of the worst violence and home invasion robberies we have in the city.”

The Mayor hopes for greater scrutiny in the future before police raid homes like Laudanski’s.
