How does pretending to take a poop get Seahawks’ Doug Baldwin more respect?

Doug Baldwin has been very vocal about the fact that Seattle’s wide receivers should get more respect, which has some wondering what he was thinking when he mimicked taking a poop on the football field in the middle of the Super Bowl.

“You’ve got to earn respect too. And he didn’t do himself very many favors with that,” said KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson in a conversation with the hosts of 710 ESPN Seattle’s The Barbershop.

The penalty flag Baldwin drew for unsportsmanlike conduct after catching a touchdown pass to put the Seahawks up two scores in the third quarter of the Super Bowl was something of a mystery to television viewers, as the full touchdown celebration was not shown.

But it appeared to have been an obscene gesture; Baldwin apparently simulated pulling down his pants over the football as if to go to the bathroom. Two officials immediately threw a flag when Baldwin squatted over the ball.

Barbershop co-host Terry “T-Holla” Hollimon said Baldwin is still a pretty young guy and we might want to consider that before judging him too harshly.

“I couldn’t tell you what I was doing at age 25. I mean I really couldn’t tell you because you’d put me off the air for saying it out loud,” said Hollimon. “He’s in the national spotlight. I don’t want to speak for him, but I think probably five, ten years from now he’ll think man, I probably shouldn’t have done that.”

Fellow Barbershop host and former Seahawks player Marcus Trufant offered perspective from someone who’s been on that stage before.

“In the NFL, you have to almost have two personalities,” said Trufant. “When you’re on the field, you’re this person, then of course you have to hit a switch when you go off the field.”

Trufant said “Angry Doug” seems to be a little angry on both sides of the field which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

“I think it makes him the player that he is and I think he may carry a little bit of the stuff that’s off the field on to the field with him and that can be good and that can be bad,” said Trufant. “I think the part he carried with him might have come out in the action of taking a dump on the field. All the frustration, people talking about the receivers being mediocre, I just think it came out.”

“Something came out alright,” said Monson.

What do you think of Baldwin’s touchdown celebration?
