LeBron James – worth the hype?

Want something refreshing on a hot summer day? Check out this podcast with Seattle Times Sports Columnist Jerry Brewer who cuts through the hype surrounding NBA star LeBron James. He simply says, “I don’t think anyone in athletics or entertainment is worth the hype.”
Brewer joined us on 97.3 KIRO FM to chat about the big answer we’re expecting tonight from King James. Which NBA team will he choose?
“The hype for Lebron started when he was about 13 years old and he was a nationally ranked basketball player,” Brewer says. “By the time he was 16 people were calling him ‘the chosen one,’ which he has tattooed on his back. Then his games were televised on national TV and the next thing you know he’s one of the last in a long line of guys who went from high school to the NBA.”
Brewer says if anyone deserves this kind of world-wide attention, it would be someone like Kobe Bryant who has already won five championships.
“But this is the state we live in with enormous hype and too much attention paid to superstars,” he says.
And as much as Brewer admits he likes to complain about sports egos, he’ll be watching the big announcement tonight. We’ll stream the 6:00 p.m. ESPN event here.
