Ken Griffey Jr. has a few pals who are looking out for him following reports that he was napping in the clubhouse when the Mariners needed him to pinch hit.
Griffey wants to know which two teammates supposedly talked to a newspaper reporter. Listen to his statement today on Shannon Drayer’s blog.
M’s designated hitter Mike Sweeney is behind Griffey saying, “We don’t think there are two players who said that. I challenged everyone in that room, if they said that, to stand up and fight me. No one stood up.”
Now a new Facebook group has formed calling for the resignation of the Tacoma News reporter, Larry LaRue, who first reported Jr. was sleeping instead of swinging a bat.
The group’s description:
Larry LaRue was the mouth for two unnamed Mariners players who decided to talk behind Ken Griffey Jr.’s back through the media. Against better journalistic judgment LaRue published the story.
LaRue hasn’t commented since his initial story ran.
