Sex in the city – Seattle’s kinky side

Do you know what your neighbors are doing behind closed doors?

This story might not be for everyone – so, consider that your warning – it’s a look at a private social organization in Seattle. Most people would consider them a sex club.

The Center for Sex Positive Culture is an ordinary-looking concrete building at the base of the Magnolia Bridge on 15th Avenue West in Seattle. Step through the door, and leave your inhibitions behind.

“This area is what we call the raw dungeon. It doesn’t have any kind of fine accouterments, other than that really cool bondage bed,” says Allena Gabosch, the club’s executive director, as she shows me around.

She points to cages, chains, bondage chairs, and everything you can imagine to help you do anything you imagine. She says this club is totally legal.

“We’re not doing anything illegal, we’re a 501(c)(7) social organization,” she says. “Anything that happens here is between adults with their informed consent.”

The non-profit started here in 1999 to accommodate non-mainstream lifestyles. Along with classes, “play days” and parties, the CSPC has the most extensive erotic library in the Northwest.

What are you thinking so far – kinky, weird, bizarre, why are you writing about this Linda? Or, cool, where are the pictures? (There’s a link at the end, btw)

“Ten to 16 percent of the population are involved in some kind of power exchange relationship,” Gabosch says. Put that another way, 10 to 16 percent of the population is kinky, though she thinks the actual percentage is “way more than that.”

An ABC News survey of sexual attitudes and behavior found that 42 percent of Americans describe themselves as “sexually adventurous” and many wish they or their partners were more exciting in bed.

Maybe what they’re wishing for isn’t quite what I saw with a man wearing red thigh high nylons, black heels and a lady’s corset, bent over a chair being spanked by a woman, but, who knows?

Gabosch says her club has had about 12,000 members over the years with almost 2,000 active members. The average age is 30, although she has some attend classes and club events who are as young as 18 and as old as 90. Most are well-educated, upper or middle class working people.

“We’re a cosmopolitan, provincial town,” Gabosch says when describing why Seattle’s kinky side is more prevalent than most of us would imagine. “We have the liberal progressiveness, so we look at something that’s a little bit outside the over culture norm and go, ‘oh that’s okay,’ but we’re small enough that we create community well. Really what this center is about is more about community than it’s about sex.”

Gabosch produces the Seattle Erotic Art Festival, which is going on this weekend and attracts as many as 4,000 people. Would you ever consider going to such an event? She encourages all of us to “step outside your comfort zone; be a little more edgy.”
