Soda drinkers and businesses within Seattle have pushed back against the tax on sugary beverages. Some businesses, including Costco, have suggested customers buy their sweetened drinks outside of city limits to avoid the soda tax.

Seattle’s ‘soda tax’ nearly doubles prices at Costco

Others have argued it’s a regressive tax, disproportionately affecting low-income families.

But instead of criticizing the city council members for approving such a tax that nearly doubles the prices of a Gatorade variety pack, maybe it’s time to thank them.

Dr. Steven Masley told Seattle’s Morning News that eating sugar can lead to a drop in cognitive brain speed. A study out of New Zealand suggests that the “sugar coma” is real. Increased glucose ingestion, according to the study, can lead to your brain shutting off.

Masely says that, over time, people who eat too much sugar not only experience a “brain fog,” but cells begin to die and their brains shrink.
