Single arrest made during mostly peaceful May Day in Seattle

May 1, 2018, 2:16 PM | Updated: May 2, 2018, 6:08 am

The only reported May Day arrest in Seattle happened early on, when a lone, mask-wearing man hurled a rock at the Amazon Spheres. Police quickly took him into custody.

Multiple groups crowded into downtown Seattle for the May Day 2018 events, from the annual workers’ rights march to a Conservative demonstration with Patriot Prayer and the Proud Boys.

The day’s events were more calm than previous years. The workers’ rights march went smoothly, which is common.

The nearby Conservative demonstration was also fairly tame. A few hundred members of Patriot Prayer and the Proud Boys rallied at Westlake for most of the afternoon. The groups are considered alt-right by some, but they argue their message is all about freedom.

And the expected anarchist march made no appearance at all.

A few black block protesters did appear on Capital Hill. However, they did not march through town.

At the end of the day, a group of activists hosted a block party in the University District. University Avenue was shut down at 45th for the event, which protested the construction of the new King County juvenile detention center. Police surrounded the event to protect the protesters and to prevent any violence.
