Doctoral student Carlos Peredo, who is studying paleontology at George Mason University in Virginia, recently named a new species of dolphin with ancient roots in the Pacific Northwest.
Peredo’s research focused on an 18-million-year-old fossil specimen in the collection of the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture.
The nearly-complete fossil was originally discovered along the banks of the Columbia River on the Washington side, just north and east of Astoria.
