Huard: Stick to your own resolutions, don’t give them to others

Just because the season of gift giving is over, doesn’t mean that people should stop thinking of others and giving them something they could use &#8212 such as recommendations to improve their life.

Katharine Whitehorn with The Guardian made a suggestion that has since gone viral. Whitehorn recommends that instead of making a New Year’s resolution for yourself each year, create one for someone else that you know could use it.

It’s a notion that Brock Huard scoffed at.

“‘These resolutions are so hard on me. It’s just not fair. I can’t keep my own. It hurts me. So I’m going to hurt you and give you a resolution!'” Huard said on KIRO Radio’s Ron and Don Show. “Just stick to your resolutions.”

But Brock has been known to accept resolutions provided to him by co-host Mike Salk.

“You’ve given me a couple in the past. Like don’t yell at the refs in the stands. And I’ve taken some of those things to heart,” he said.

Salk isn’t entirely on board to butt in to other peoples’ lives. But he does back up the tradition of making resolutions.

“I try not to overreach with them, like the generic, old school lose 20 pounds type of thing. I try to look at something small that I can do,” he said, recommending that people try to make it simple but effective.

“Two that I’ve made in the last two years that I’ve managed to stick to &#8212 one is really stupid &#8212 I’ve made a huge effort to say ‘few,’ ‘fewer,’ and ‘less than,’ correctly. I’ve made an effort to find out when to use the word ‘fewer’ and when to use the word ‘less,'” he explained.

“The other one I did, probably more relevant to your life &#8212 a few years ago I found out that people were sending nice notes to each other. Not just saying nice things. But like after they hung out, they would text, ‘Hey, nice seeing you, I’m glad we are good friends,'” he added. “I made a New Years resolution to say nice things, and not just say them, but to write them. I’ve made an effort.”

So which is the best route to go &#8212 give yourself a simple resolution, or pass that gift on to someone else?
