1 killed, 1 injured in random Pioneer Square stabbing after Sounders game

One man is dead and his partner seriously injured after a random stabbing in Pioneer Square Friday evening following the Seattle Sounders game at CenturyLink Field.

Seattle police say 46-year-old Troy Wolff and his partner, Kristin Ito, 30, were walking near King Street Station at around 10:30 p.m. on S. Jackson St. after leaving the game when they were attacked by a 44-year-old man.

Wolff, chair of the English department at Shoreline Community College and a resident of the Beacon Hill neighborhood, died from multiple stab wounds.

His partner, Kristin Ito, who was also stabbed repeatedly, was in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center late Saturday afternoon.

Police say the suspect confronted the woman and began repeatedly stabbing her in the torso with a small knife.

Wolff attempted to intervene, and authorities say the suspect then began stabbing him in the neck and torso.

“Investigation indicates that the suspect is a stranger to the victims and that the attacks were unprovoked. The circumstances surrounding the assaults remains under active investigation however, there are indications that the suspect was operating at a diminished mental capacity,” said Seattle police detective Jeff Kappel in a statement.

The suspect is being held at the King County Jail for investigation of murder.

“This is an unbelievably tragic loss,” said Shoreline Community College Interim President Daryl Campbell. “Troy was loved by students, loved by his fellow faculty members, loved by all who knew him.”
