What are they building at 65th and Roosevelt?

With all the construction cranes popping up all over the area, we’re constantly wondering “what are they building?”

MyNorthwest.com will start answering the question with a new weekly series that puts some of our area’s high profile projects in the spotlight.

This week, we look at the big project you can’t miss along I-5 in the Roosevelt neighborhood just east of the freeway at 65th.

What used to be an aging block next to the Shell gas station is giving way to a shiny, new mixed-use development called The Rooster.

Construction is well underway on what’s slated to become about 195 units of studio, one, two-bedroom and townhouse apartments housing above 2,780 square feet of ground-level retail with two levels of underground parking.

Plans call for a 40-foot courtyard between the two buildings, as well as a rooftop deck.

Developer Lake Union Partners recently announced the popular Portage Bay Cafe would be one of the retail businesses in the new complex when it opens next year.

For those curious, the other big construction cranes looming just east of the project are working on the new Link light rail Roosevelt station.
