After Governor Jay Inslee announced restrictions on social gatherings over 250, with more severe restrictions in King County, some wondered if movie theaters were impacted by the coronavirus guidance. And, more importantly, are they considered safe?
Retail stores are not subject to the restrictions. But is a movie theater considered retail space or a social gathering? If a concert or play is a social gathering, is a movie theater?
It was a question several listeners asked me throughout the day, and not just because folks love movies. As major sporting events are canceled and kids are now home from school in large parts of Western Washington, movie theaters could be an avenue to alleviate some our boredom — and our stress.
We now have guidance.
Movie theaters and coronavirus
Late Wednesday afternoon, Public Health – Seattle & King County released guidance for retail businesses during this coronavirus emergency. Movie theaters are listed specifically as subject to these new guidelines.
Some of the guidelines are common sense: Clean high touch surfaces more often, encourage cashless transactions, encourage online booking when possible, and post more reminders to customers and staff to practice better hygiene.
What are the legal implications of Inslee’s rules on social gatherings?
And, of course, customers should continue to continue better habits to help stem the spread of coronavirus: cough in to your sleeve, wash hands, and stop touching your face.
Hollywood is understandably concerned with the coronavirus pandemic. There is a reasonable belief that concerns over the coronavirus will keep people home. That hurts business and will likely result in low waged workers having hours cut dramatically.
New guidance from Public Health says movie theaters can remain open and are not considered social gatherings that must be closed down.
Will you go during this coronavirus crisis?
