Detectives discover more victims of Bremerton child rapist , school volunteer

Sep 29, 2014, 5:29 PM | Updated: 5:32 pm

Investigators say they’ve identified at least five additional victims and there could be more after the arrest of an accused Kitsap County child rapist and pornographer who volunteered at local schools.

Stephen Robert Jabs, 51, was arrested last Thursday after detectives responded to tips from witnesses and found scores of inappropriate images featuring underage children.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ken Dickinson says Jabs was already under investigation for the alleged sexual assault of a young girl in March. He is now charged with rape of a child.

They just recently learned he had been volunteering at Crownhill Elementary School and West Hills STEM Academy in Bremerton.

“Through the weekend detectives and child interviewers have spoken with numerous additional children and as a result of those interviews have determined there are additional victims,” Dickinson says.

The 8-year-old victim who sparked the original investigation described numerous incidents of sexual abuse by Jabs, who she called “Papa Steve”, in interviews with the Kitsap County Prosecutor’s Office Special Assault Unit. She said the incidents began when she was 3-years-old and continued for years as Jabs babysit the girl, her sister and others.

The victim told investigators Jabs regularly photographed and videotaped the children naked as well as abusing them.

Authorities are encouraging any parents whose children may have come in contact with Jabs to speak with them and contact Detective Aaron Baker at 360-337-5611.
