Man shot at Capitol Hill protest moments after mayor, chief speak

Moments after Seattle Mayor Durkan and Police Chief Best spoke about an incident at 11th and Pine on Saturday night, police say a car drove into the crowd at the same location. A man jumped out waving a gun and shot a victim.

The 27-year-old victim was in stable condition Sunday night. The suspect is in police custody.

10:32pm – Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant was tweeting from the protest at 11th and Pine Sunday evening.

10:11pm – Police say they’ve repeatedly warned protesters to stop moving the barricade.

9:40pm- Police have turned on bright lights toward protesters 11th and Pine. Protesters may be moving the barricade.

9:00pm –
Seattle police say they have a shooting suspect in custody and recovered a gun after man drove a car into the crowd at 11th and Pine. Seattle Fire medics took a victim to the hospital. Officers searched the area, but don’t believe there are any more victims. Read more.

8:33pm – Seattle Fire reports a 27-year-old man was shot at 11th and Pine.

7:52pm – Chief Best says Sunday evening that the scene at 11th and Pine, where her family members are protesting, is like nothing she’s ever seen before. Read more here. 

7:20pm – Mayor Durkan and Chief Best will soon address the public in a virtual press conference streaming here.

6:32pm – Mayor Jenny Durkan and Chief Carmen Best’s press conference has been delayed to 7:15 p.m.

Meanwhile, Seattle City and King County Councilmembers, state senators, and state representatives sent a letter to the Mayor’s office calling for the demilitarization of the police department, restricting the use of excessive or deadly force, increasing accountability and transparency in police union contracts, give subpoena power to oversight boards, and redirect police funding to “community-based alternatives.”

5:42pm – Sunday’s protest in South Seattle appears to be dispersing, with participants leaving through the Rainier Beach neighborhood. Protesters at 11th and Pine in Capitol Hill have grown to roughly a couple hundred.

5:05pm – Mayor Jenny Durkan will holding a press conference today at 6:30 p.m.

She plans to address weekend demonstrations, as well as “policy changes after community conversations.”

4:20pm – Protesters are moving southbound on Rainier Avenue South between South Holden Street and South 51st Avenue. South Othello Street between Rainier and MLK Way has reopened.

3:15pm – Protesters are blocking the intersection of Othello Street and Rainier Avenue South. Drivers in the area are advised to use other routes.

3:11pm – The eastbound direction of South Othello Street at Rainier, as well as the westbound direction at MLK Jr. Way South. Meanwhile, roughly a hundred people are gathered at the 11th and Pine barricade in Capitol Hill near the East Precinct.

S Othello St blocked EB at Rainier and WB at MLK Jr Way S for demonstrations. Use alternate routes.

2:10pm – Police spent the morning setting up several metal barriers with cement reinforcement throughout the Capitol Hill neighborhood.

2:06pm – Protesters are moving through Rainier Valley. Drivers are advised to be cautious of pedestrians in the roadway.
