Two fires erupt along I-5 through downtown Seattle

Two fires erupted along I-5 through downtown Seattle Tuesday afternoon sending plumes of smoke along the roadway.

Traffic has slowed on the freeway in response to the smoke. Check current traffic conditions here.

One fire from a car on southbound I-5 near Yesler Way sent smoke into the air.

Another fire erupted from a homeless encampment underneath the freeway near Dearborn Street. The Seattle Fire Department has ruled that incident “accidental.” The fire began in a cooking area of the encampment with a cooking stove and pot. One tent was destroyed. No other tents in the camp were damaged.

The fires have been put out by Seattle Fire Department crews, but clean up is underway. Traffic remains slow around the scenes.
