The father of an 8-year-old girl was arrested after a gun he was handling went off and a bullet hit the child on Sunday, a spokesman for the Federal Way Police Department said.
Officers were called to St. Francis Hospital around 11:30 a.m. after they were notified that a child with a gunshot wound was dropped off at the hospital by a private vehicle.
Police said the investigation revealed the shooting happened at an apartment complex in the 27900 block of Pacific Highway South in Federal Way.
Investigators said a 35-year-old man, who police said was the father of the victim, was handling a gun in the apartment when it went off. Police said the bullet traveled through three walls and hit the child in another room.
The father, who was at the hospital with his daughter, has since been arrested.
The girl was later taken to Harborview Medical Center, where she is in critical condition. Federal Way police said she is not expected to survive.
