What are they building? Weyerhaeuser headquarters underway in Pioneer Square

An office building that will house an estimated 800 employees is under construction in Pioneer Square.
In this week’s edition of “What are they building?” Weyerhaeuser is relocating its headquarters to Seattle from its longtime home in Federal Way.
Construction crews broke ground at 200 Occidental Ave. earlier this month. The project is expected to be complete in the third quarter of 2016, according to Weyerhaeuser.
When finished, the new headquarters will be 216,000 square feet and eight stories tall. It is being built on a 26,000 square foot site.
The company’s current 430-acre campus is costly and too large for the company, President and CEO Doyle Simons told the Associated Press in 2014.
Weyerhaeuser is one of the world’s largest private owners of timberlands and one of the largest manufacturers of wood and cellulose fibers products. Founded in Tacoma in 1900, it moved its headquarters to Federal Way in 1971.
The new building is being constructed under Seattle’ 2012 energy code. There will be a green roof operable windows, photovoltaic array on the rooftop, and high-efficiency water fixtures. The floor-to-ceiling height will be approximately 13 feet, which will provide more natural light.
