After taking a break last weekend, Bertha – the tunneling machine moving below the Seattle waterfront – has passed the 2,000-foot mark. Crews have installed 300 tunnel rings in her wake.

The milestone means Bertha and Seattle Tunnel Partners have completed 20 percent of the job.
Now the world’s largest boring machine is finishing up Zone 2 (out of 10 zones.) Zone 3 is located under the Columbia Street on-ramp that leads to the Alaskan Way Viaduct. After that, Bertha will bore under Western Avenue.
