The Bellevue School District is fighting a decision to block its high school football team from competing for titles in the coming years.

The KingCo Conference — the organization which handles local school sporting events — barred Bellevue High School’s football team from participating in postseason games over the next four years. Now the Seattle Times reports that the school district is planning to appealing that decision. The district filed an intent to appeal on Monday.

The KinCo Conference imposed the sanctions on the football team last week after a series of reports reflected poorly on the program — starting with an investigation by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. That investigation posed a range of allegations — from the team ignoring rules to using a private school as a diploma mill to get top players from out of the district.

The district’s human resources manager followed up with an investigation of his own and concluded that Coach Butch Goncharoff and Assistant Coach Pat Jones violated school policy by operating summer football camps and taking in excessive amounts of money for it.
