Effective immediately, every state agency under Governor Inslee’s control is required to shift its fleet of vehicles to battery powered or other zero-emission options when replacing worn out cars and trucks.

Gov. Inslee says Glasgow climate conference needs imagination, optimism

The executive order from the governor seeks to move state government to an all-electric fleet of vehicles by 2035. It applies to 24 executive branch agencies under Inslee’s control. The agencies must buy battery-powered electric vehicles to replace passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks with internal combustion engines once they need to be replaced.

The order does allow for exceptions if there is not an emission-free alternative, though agencies then must get the “lowest-emission, cost-effective option” available, such as plug-in hybrid electric.

The governor’s plan requires at least 40% of the fleet to be electric by 2025, 75% by 2030, and 100% by 2035. It also sets a date of 2040 for the state’s entire fleet of vehicles, including the medium and heavy-duty vehicles and trucks, to be electric.
