Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy dead after being shot Tuesday in Spanaway

A Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy has died after being shot in Spanaway on Tuesday, Sheriff Ed Troyer confirmed to KIRO Newsradio’s Dori Monson.
Deputy Dominique Calata, 35, served with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department for just over six years. He and Sergeant Ryan Scaniffe, 45, were both wounded while serving a warrant to a felony suspect in Spanaway. Scaniffe, a 21-year veteran of the department, got out of surgery Tuesday and remains in stable condition.

According to Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer, the suspect — who was killed in the incident as well — was in a stolen vehicle, and was approached by a SWAT team.
“We shut the road down, pulled him over, and got him stopped,” Troyer described. “He decided that he wasn’t going to cooperate and, in a gun battle, he fired rounds and he struck two of our deputies. Our deputies returned fire and struck him.”
