Seattle’s landmarks and sports teams are wearing orange this weekend in support of National Gun Violence Awareness.

The Space Needle, Pacific Science Center, and all three major sports stadiums in the city are all lit up in an orange hue in recognition of Wear Orange Weekend. The ‘Wear Orange‘ campaign signifies National Gun Violence Awareness Day, which annually takes place the first weekend of June.

The tradition started in 2015 in honor of a 15-year old girl who was shot and was killed at a Chicago playground.

The recent mass shootings in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York that claimed the lives of dozens in recent weeks has revamped the national debate about gun control in the United States.

Last weekend, four of Seattle’s professional sports teams showed solidarity by highlighting the End Gun Violence movement.

The Seattle Mariners announced that the team will be wearing orange and maroon t-shirts in honor of Robb Elementary School during batting practice ahead of their game with the Texas Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

“The Mariners believe it’s important to continue to raise awareness about gun violence and use our platform to make an impact by supporting organizations like OFSVP,” stated Catie Griggs, Seattle Mariners President of Business Operations.

Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks changed their social media avatars to an orange ‘End Gun Violence’ graphic as Lumen Field illuminated SoDo in an orange hue.

The Seattle Storm dedicated their Friday night home game at Climate Pledge Arena to the Wear Orange movement.

The Seattle Sounders FC held a special one day auction benefitting the Alliance for Gun Responsibility Foundation.
