Whatcom County Sheriff dispatched swift water rescue technicians, K-9s, drone operators, border patrol and trauma and rescue units to the scene. A customs helicopter arrived 90 minutes after the raft spilled the five people into the water.
One body was located at around 7:30 p.m., submerged in a log jam a half-mile from the scene of the incident. The following morning at 7:30 a.m., the other body was located downriver of the Highway 542 bridge.
Neither body exhibited signs of trauma. One cause of death was ruled drowning by the Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office. The other medical examination has yet to conclude.
