A program to exchange guns for gift cards will be hosted by the Kirkland Police Department on Saturday, according to a media release.

The event will be held June 25 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Kirkland Justice Center, located at 11750 Northeast 118th Street.

“Kirkland experienced six gun-related suicides since 2020,” said Deputy Mayor Jay Arnold. “Encouraging community members to voluntarily relinquish ownership of unwanted guns is one step we can take to help reduce the likelihood of accidental injuries and suicides by firearms.”

Depending on the type of gun, people may receive Visa gift cards worth $25 to $250.

No registration is required, but participants must show proof they live in Kirkland.

Participants are also asked to stay in their car. Guns must be unloaded and out of reach, for example in the trunk or back seat.

More information can be found on the Guns for Gift Cards website.
