The King County Prosecutor’s Office has now filed felony stalking charges against Brett Allen Forsell, the man police say harassed and threatened Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal at her Seattle home.

Forsell had been previously arrested but was released as police still had to establish probable cause. Seattle Police have now provided that to the court.

The charges for stalking are increased due to Jayapal’s status as a public official and because Forsell’s actions are likely retaliation for her duties as a politician.

Jayapal released a statement about the charges, expressing her thanks for the work that the prosecutor’s office is doing.

“The news today from the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s office that they have charged Mr. Forsell with felony stalking demonstrates that the justice system is doing its work,” Jayapal said. “I am grateful to the King County Prosecutor’s Office for holding this man accountable for his dangerous actions, to the victim’s advocate for her assistance throughout the process, and to the Seattle Police Department, U.S. Capitol Police, and the House Sergeant at Arms for continuing to keep my family, me, and my staff safe.

The prosecutor’s office feels they have enough evidence to prove felony stalking, but prosecutors are not pursuing hate crime charges at this time.

They’ve also issued a warrant for his arrest, and requested bail be set at $500,000.
