Greater Good Charities, alongside the Humane Society of the United States, organized the emergency airlift from animal shelters in Florida to shelters in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

The airlift of 181 animals — 34 dogs, 118 cats, and 29 guinea pigs — was needed to help make room for more surrendered, lost, and homeless pets dropped off at animal shelters during the hurricane, according to KIRO 7.

The Humane Society of the United States conducted animal evacuations at Dixie County Animal Control and Madison County Animal Services — two shelters in the path of the storm — before Hurricane Ian hit.

New Jersey took in 88 pets through the Greater Goods Charities.

Rescuing pets from Hurricane Ian has developed into a nationwide task, as the Brandywine Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) organized an airlift to rescue 68 shelter animals, sending them to New Castle, Del.

“Being able to provide animal welfare organizations with the expertise helps streamline processes and limit duplicative efforts to ensure that all animal needs are addressed as quickly as possible,” said Wanda Merling, Manager of ASPCA Disaster Response, during an Oct. 6 update. “Once we receive the request for assistance, we help ensure those donations get to the animal welfare organizations that need them the most.”

More than 630 animals have been assisted through ASPCA’s Hurricane Ian response efforts, as of this reporting.

Those interested in supporting displaced pets can make a donation through the Emergency Animal Rescue Fund.
