Link light rail worker injured in concrete form collapse

A worker is in serious condition after an accident at a Sound Transit construction site in Mountlake Terrace, according to officials.

The 40-year-old man was taken to Harborview Medical Center. He arrived in critical condition, but is improving.

The accident occurred around noon Thursday at the Link light rail expansion in Montlake Terrace along Interstate 5.

South County Fire spokesperson Shawneri Guzman says a form to hold poured concrete malfunctioned and part of it fell on him right around noon today.

South County Fire crews responded to a concrete form collapse on I5 near the light rail project in Mountlake Terrace just before noon today. The patient was quickly extricated and transported to Harborview Medical Center. His condition is unknown at this time.

Guzman tells us the form is used to hold wet concrete and that the worker was at ground level, not on an elevated track.

“He was extricated very quickly, and he was transferred to Harborview about half an hour after being extracted,” Guzman said.

Sound Transit says the injured carpenter was hit by a wall panel that fell, but the cause of the accident is still unclear.

“What we know is that a carpenter was injured when a wall panel fell. Our thoughts are with the worker and his family. We will be working closely with the contractor and relevant authorities to investigate the incident and identify appropriate responses,” Sound Transit said in a statement.
