Steve Hobbs has defeated Julie Anderson in the race for Secretary of State. Hobbs finished with 49.3% while Anderson tallied 46.9%. More than 2 million ballots were cast.

Hobbs is the first non-Republican candidate to win the Secretary of State seat in nearly 60 years. He was appointed to the office following Republican Kim Wyman’s early exit when she took a post in the other Washington. Hobbs’ appointment marked the first time a Democrat had held the state’s top election post in nearly 60 years.

Pierce County Auditor Julie Anderson ran without party affiliation, citing her very strong belief that political parties do not belong in the Secretary of State’s Office. Anderson managed to rake in $159,745 in campaign contributions as of late July.

More than 50,000 write-in ballots were logged in the Secretary of State race, tallying approximately 3% of the total votes cast. Republican State Representative Brad Klippert ran a write-in campaign endorsed last month by the state Republican Party.

This is a developing story.
