Driver killed in crash that split car in two; MLK Jr. Way closed for hours

A crash early Tuesday morning left one dead and forced city officials to close the road for hours. (KIRO 7)

The northbound lanes of Martin Luther King Jr. Way could be closed until this afternoon because of a crash that killed one person Tuesday morning.

A car was split in half after crashing into a pole around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The driver was ejected from the vehicle.

Police say the crash may have occurred while the driver was racing.

MLK is closed northbound between South Boeing Access Road and South Henderson.

The crash damaged a pole that Seattle City Light now needs to repair.

Because of the road closure, drivers can expect more traffic on northbound I-5.

The Seattle Department of Transportation recommends the following detours:
