VIDEO: Seattle thieves pull off string of ATM heists

Dec 19, 2016, 3:48 PM

ATMs all over Seattle have started to go missing as thieves pull off a string of ATM thefts from grocery stores to fast food chains.

SPD released security camera video of one such ATM (video below) theft that took place on Dec. 2 at a business in the 2800 block of East Madison Street. The incident began when the thieves busted in the front door of a convenience store by driving the rear-end of a van into the building. They then snatched the ATM, placed it in the van, and sped off.

It’s not the first such incident. SPD reports that detectives are on the hunt for a team of thieves who have struck gas stations, small grocery and convenience stores, a golf course and a local burger chain and at least nine break-ins around Seattle within the past two months. Detectives say that the thieves usually get a stolen truck or van and use it to smash into a shop. They then roll an ATM into the vehicle and drive away.

After smashing the ATM open and taking the cash, the vehicle and machine are usually dropped on the side of the road nearby.

Two suspects are usually seen on cameras. They always are wearing hoods and masks to cover their faces. Police believe at least one other person is also part of the team.

Anyone with information about the thieves are asked to call the West Precinct Detective Unit at 206-684-5730.
