A fight between two women turned deadly when one of them pulled out a gun and shot and killed the other.

The shooting happened just before 1 a.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the Avenue Apartments in the 10700 block of 14th Avenue Southwest near White Center.

Police were called to the complex after dispatchers received numerous 911 calls about hearing a gunshot.

REPORT: Shots fired from two vehicles in Columbia City

When police arrived, they found a 28-year-old woman lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second 28-year-old woman, who King County sheriff’s deputies believe fired the shot, was taken into custody and transported to Highline Hospital with minor injuries from the fight.

Once released, she will be booked for investigation of second-degree murder.

Detectives say the women knew each other and had been at a party at a nearby apartment before the shooting.

Authorities have not released a motive, but said the situation should not have escalated to that point.

“Any type of shooting is senseless, and we don’t know what the fight was over, but certainly there can’t be anything that’s serious enough to end up shooting somebody and losing your life over,” said Cindi West with the King County Sheriff’s Office.
