Like a lot of people around town, longtime Seattle radio personality Shawn Stewart’s only child is four legged. And she’s turning her love of animals into a new radio show debuting Sunday on KIRO Radio called “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs.”

“It’s a show for people who love their animals and we know there are tons of them,” Stewart says.

Just like the name says, the show will focus on cats and dogs, with expert guests taking listener calls and tackling different issues ranging from behavior to health.

“The co-hosts are very expert dog trainers who will help members of the audience with tricky situations with their pets,” she says. “They all come from a place of really positive reinforcement for the animal.”

Some of the upcoming topics will include clicker training, aggression and nutrition for dogs and cats alike.

“We’ll talk to vets and experts in pet behavior about people who have cats that meow all night and keep them up, cats that lick all the time, obesity, that kind of thing.”

With recent reports showing Seattle has more dogs than kids and Washington state the fifth most cat owners in the country, there should be plenty to talk about.

“It just seemed like such a great a fit for the area where we love our dog parks, we love hiking with our dogs, we love to talk about our animals and we’re also on the front lines of holistic medicine for our animals and I think that all ties in,” Stewart says.

The show will also a feature an adoptable pet every week from the Seattle Humane Society, and offer expert advice on finding the best four legged friend. That’s where Stewart got her dog Charlie Trout, who had been found wandering the mean streets of Everett and was destined for euthanasia before her rescue.

“I’m just so grateful and my life has just been transformed having Charlie in my life. Animal rescue organizations like the Seattle Humane Society are just so near and dear to my heart.”

It’s Raining Cats and Dogs with Shawn Stewart airs Sundays at 1 p.m. on KIRO Radio. Podcast will be available soon.
