Space Needle restaurant closed for 9 months

Aug 31, 2017, 6:06 PM

After Thursday, the restaurant on the top of Seattle’s Space Needle is closed for the next nine months while it undergoes a $100 million renovation.

The plan is to replace the floor with thick glass, allowing diners to see the 500 foot drop below. The restaurant will be the first rotating restaurant with a glass floor. The observation deck fence will also be replaced with glass. The Space Needle will also get another set of elevators.

It’s the largest investment into the landmark since its construction before the World’s Fair in 1962.

Some employees of the restaurant tell KIRO Radio they haven’t received a guarantee they will be hired back once the remodel is over in May 2018.

Calls to their union have not been returned.
