So you call yourself a fan of your favorite band? Unless you’ve dedicated the last three decades to collecting every poster, article and recording ever made, built a website and a museum and even changed your name, then you can’t hold a candle to Seattle native Andy Golub…er, Durandy.
Durandy is somwhere North of obsessed with 80’s hitmakers Duran Duran. So much so, the 40-year-old Bellevue legal researcher has created an unparalleled collection of memorabilia from the MTV icons, featuring thousands of posters, pictures, books, records and anything else related to the pretty boy popsters. It’s considered the biggest archive of the band, with some of his collection even on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
And as the band that made MTV famous with pioneering videos like “Rio” and “Hungry Like the Wolf” comes to town for a Friday show at Everett’s Comcast Arena, he’s more excited than a little kid at Christmas.
“They’re iconic,” Durandy breathlessly gushed in an interview with Dori. It resonates with people. “People never forget their first memories putting Duran Duran posters on their walls.” (actually most of us have long since forgotten, but we don’t want to rain on his parade.)
But that hardly sums up the obsession. It first struck when he was about 12, growing up in Magnolia, and heard the hit song “The Reflex.” For some reason the band got under his skin and he couldn’t get enough.
Now, nearly three decades later, he’s still nearly jumps out of his skin at the mere mention of Simon LeBon and the boys. He is truly a ‘Duranimal’.
“Oooohhhh, the air is electric in the city,” an exuberant Randy, I mean Durandy tells Dori.
Maybe in his heart, but with tickets selling for half-price on Groupon, Dori isn’t so sure that many of us share the passion.
“They look better than ever, they are absolutely ageless and you’re going find the absolute hardcore beautiful people who love the band, who want to be there. You can’t judge that by the ticket sales,” Durandy countered.
Words can’t convey the breathless enthusiasm exploding from Durandy discussing anything Duran Duran related. You just have to hear the entire interview.
“This is going to be fantastic. This is incredible. Oh my god,” Durandy exclaims about Friday night’s show.
