Tom Tangney learned quickly that when you’re performing in front of a live crowd that’s been drinking, you shouldn’t give them too much leeway.
Tangney and John Curley performed at Hale’s Ales in Fremont on Friday night. The owner of the brewpub, Mike Hale, created a beer called the “Sidekick,” a new American Session Ale, with Tom and Curley’s faces on the label.

When discussing a somewhat sensitive talk about Russell Wilson and pop singer Ciara’s engagement, Tangney called out to the crowd. And, of course, they called back.
Shortly thereafter, Curley took Tom aside to let him know the problems he was inviting.
“I said, ‘Hey listen, we can’t interact with the audience or this could get out of control fast,'” Curley said. “Because once they realize, ‘Hey I’m the third man on stage,’ they will dominate the show and every time we try to change topics, they won’t let us.
“Imagine somebody in the backseat of the car jumping over your shoulders and grabbing hold of the steering wheel and then just wildly steering right and left in every direction they want to,” he added. “That’s why I had to warn Tom, ‘Don’t look up, don’t make eye contact with them, don’t in any way invite them in. Just keep going, head down, keep driving.'”
