Over a thousand students in Bellingham walked out of class Wednesday in honor of the victims of the Parkland, Florida shooting.

Students walked out of both middle and high schools. Some held signs stating “taking guns are not the solution” while others spoke and shared their stories.

KIRO 7 reports one student shared her story about the time she suffered from mental illness. She said, if she would have had access to a gun before being treated for depression, she probably wouldn’t be here today.

Several school principles sent letters to parents to express how proud they were of the students taking action.

During a press conference In Olympia Wednesday, Washington Governor Jay Inslee said that “thoughts and prayers were not enough” after the mass shooting in Florida. He expressed support for the students in Bellingham.
