Seattle Mayor Durkan to protest immigration policy at US-Mexico border

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan is part of a delegation of U.S. mayors that will travel to the U.S.-Mexico border in Tornillo, Texas to “protest the Trump Administration’s family separation policy and call on the Administration for an immediate reversal.”

The mayors will hold a news conference at 8 a.m. PST Thursday from the Tornillo Port of Entry. Tornillo is reportedly the location of a newly erected tent city for detained immigrant children and the location of a federal shelter where 1,500 children are being held.

The mayor’s office says Durkan introduced a resolution condemning the Department of Justice’s and Department of Homeland Security’s “zero tolerance” policy of separating children from their parents two weeks ago. The U.S. Conference of Mayors passed the resolution in a unanimous vote.

“As a mother, it is unconscionable that our country is allowing children to be literally torn out of the arms of their mothers,” Mayor Durkan said in a news release. “There is no way to justify the policies and actions of this administration-  they continue to misrepresent the law, leaving families devastated and children traumatized. The world is watching, bearing witness to this inhumane and un-American policy. We cannot stand by without taking action.”
