Marshawn Lynch is getting a lot of attention for speaking out about what he regrets about the Super Bowl XLIX in 2015. One of the statements that Marshawn Lynch made really resonated with me. He said, “You win some, you lose some, but you live.”

I relate to that because that was one of the same speeches I often gave the girls I coached in basketball. Varsity athletes put in so many hours — two hours a day, six days a week in practice, all while keeping up their grades.

I always told them how much I appreciated and admired them, especially after a really tough loss. Marshawn’s speech was one of my own speeches — there are so many people who go through life on a flat line, without any highs or lows. The depth of despair you feel after a tough loss shows you that you are alive.

It’s like when you have your first love. When you’re in the middle of it, you wake up thinking about your partner, you go to sleep thinking about your partner. And then when you go through that inevitable first breakup, it’s the most horrible thing. But throughout it, you know that you’re alive.

Tough times are things that I cherish because they are a reminder that you’re alive.

Way to go, Marshawn Lynch.
