A veteran Pullman police sergeant was arrested Tuesday, and stands accused of sexually assaulting a Washington State University student.
Last April, a female WSU student accused Sergeant Dan Hargraves of sexual misconduct. Allegedly, Hargraves drove the woman to a park after picking her up stumbling outside late at night, and made her engage in a sex act.
He was placed on paid administrative leave and desk duty during the investigation, which is now complete.
Hargraves was arrested by the Washington State Patrol on Tuesday, and is being charged with custodial sexual misconduct in the first degree. He worked for the Pullman Police Department for 19 years, and was a sergeant for 14 years.
“WSP detectives worked on the case for several months, doing various interviews, as well as working with the WSP crime lab and processing numerous pieces of evidence,” State Trooper Jeff Sevigney told KIRO Radio.
“The alleged criminal misconduct is completely unacceptable behavior for a Pullman police officer,” Pullman Police Chief Gary Jenkins said in a news release. “We place a high value on the community’s trust, and we will continue to work every day to earn and maintain that trust.”
Pullman PD will now conduct its own internal, administrative investigation, a standard procedure following the completion of a criminal investigation.
